Fred Durst has been the most recent guest on ‘Right Now’, a podcast centered around John Goblikon, life insurance sales-goblin and lead singer of metal band Nekrogoblikon (Powercore, We Need a Gimmick), or was he?

Durst did the podcast as ‘Gary’ a self-proclaimed t-bag artist and as of the podcast, the producer of Nekrogoblikon’s next album, ‘I’m a Sourdough Just Trying to Rise’. But acting under a persona like this is nothing new from Fred Durst.

Last year (2023) he appeared on episode 9 of ‘Jam In The Van’ a podcast by Pauly Shore, as ‘Funky Moses’, a dodgy record label owner looking to sign Pauly and ‘The Crusties’. Funky Moses is also credited for directing the video for ‘Dad Vibes’ by Fred’s own band Limp Bizkit.

Fred Durst has acted under personas throughout his entire career, a prime example being the fitted-red-cap wearing ‘douche bag’ frat boy a lot of us know him as. Fred created ‘red cap’ as a character for his music, a way to market himself. The personality gave the band an image and the bright red hat was the Hollywood hair theory done right, the idea that a person's hair, or whatever they put on their hair, is a key factor in becoming a household name or memorable.

Even just considering the band’s music videos from 1999-2000, the fact that there was essentially a Fred Durst costume that could be worn by anyone is a huge sign of how well it worked, and this is evident again in the promos and footage we have of the upcoming A24 horror comedy Y2K (which he appears in), where characters are easily associated with Limp Bizkit just by sporting the synonymous fitted red hats.

Under that persona, and more evident in recent years, Fred Durst was not at all how the general public interpreted him as back in the late 90s and early 2000s, in fact Limp Bizkit was only started so he could get a pathway into making movies.
